Why are people so stupid

Sorry, just ranting. My daughter works for me, we share a last name. She shares a first name with our receptionist. This is the basic premises.

Earlier today, I had some errands and left the office already, otherwise, I would have already dealt with it immediately. Apparently, a phone call came in, soliciting advertising $$$$ for a relatively new magazine. We do not do any print advertising other than direct mail as it has never brought as any business and the latter simply not enough to justify the cost. We rely mainly on word by mouth and have done so for 20 years in a difficult and often very transient industry. The caller started off real good by asking for my daughter by her first name. So our receptionist said she was xxxx but that the caller likely did not want her but at which point she was interrupted and told that obviously she was not the one the caller wanted. Caller then gave her pitch to my daughter who advised her that we do not do print advertising. Caller then went on a passive/aggressive rant about us not supporting the community. Personally, I would have hung up on her but daughter who is much more patient than I, advised her to check our community link re our community involvement and finally told her that caller should, as all solicitations are invited to, send an email to the owner in our general inbox.

Well apparently, she lost it completely. She thought that my daughter was the owner and was in a pique about having wasted her precious time with an imposter.

Does she really think, after being told that we do not use her services/products period, her behavior was going to convince us otherwise? Given that our last name is not very common and it is known through website and within the community, the company has only about 20 employees. What are the chances that we are not related? Or even that staff would not relate all to me?

Question:

Can anyone read my posts or only those who follow me?

Warning about fake books

It appears that someone is publishing books under the name of Amanda Quick. A fellow poster on the Amazon Romance forum warned other readers.

One is titled Killing Emerald. It says it's free on KU. Otherwise, it's 4.99. The second one is Demons of the Stormed Greenstone. Also free on KU. Otherwise, 3.99. The first one has 4 reviews, and the second one has 3. All reviews give one star and point out that these are not by AQ and are just gibberish. The pictures shown for the covers are not the typical AQ covers.

I copied part of her post above. I checked on AQ's website but you can either subscribe to her newsletter and contact her via Facebook and I don't do Facebook, maybe someone else can take is up and inform AQ about it and leave it in her hands.  It does not look that Amazon will do anything.

Question ?????

Does BL have a feature like: If you like this, try XYZ?  There was a website I would go on and check but I can't remember which one and no it was not GR.  I am a bit in a rut or maybe just have a hard time concentrating. Some of you may know I am trying to retire and I have my fingers crossed that it will happen by the end of next month and maybe afterward I will feel like trying new books. I have a 210 TBR pile (paper and Kindle) but I find myself only re-reading.

Need advise re Kindle

I am nearing retirement (yeah); like most business owners, when I had to travel, I had my lap top to work, my Ipad to show off kids and grandchild and to read and my Blackberry. When traveling for a short amount of time, I already just took the IPad and now I also have an Iphone which reduces the need for the IPad with regard to photos and even reading newspaper articles.

Reading books on the IPad has many advantages, like Google maps - I enjoy seeing places or following a route in adventure stories. But the disadvantage of course is that the battery last less time than on a Kindle and regardless of the anti-glare screen, reading outside in the sun is difficult.

I will continue to keep my IPad but mostly for reading in my favorite chair. For traveling - and not needing to work - I want to get a Kindle.

Can someone - especially those also residing in Canada - advise which Kindle I should get?

Leafmarks

Does anyone know how to change my email on Leafmarks? I checked the profile page but all it offers to change is my password.

Thanks, Angela

I am back online

I am back home and so is my sweetie, Madison.

The decision to go on holiday forced us (hubby and me) to look at all options regarding our babies, one really shy and scared (of her own shadow) young Bernese (nevertheless 90 pounds) named Nina, one cancer-stricken and for the breed ancient but totally unaware of both, Bernese named Charlie and one cancer survivor, even older and now frail, with a herniated disc in her neck Bernese, Madison.  If I had stayed home, we of course would have coped somehow. And I had toyed with the idea of cancelling my trip. With me going away, there was no way my husband could cope, hence the decision to hospitalize Madison. During her enforced rest, she grew stronger than she would have at home with the two others, physio therapists manipulated the disc and she had acupuncture. My husband and daughter alternated and visited her and yesterday, we picked her up again. In the meantime, we had a ramp built and while Charlie still tries to find his way inside the old fashion way, both ladies took easily to the ramp. So, on the four-legged baby front the universe is back on kilter.

My trip overall was great, nice to be away from the daily grind and of course having my brother and his family with me. Getting to the Turks is a different story; our itinerary was from Vancouver to the Turks and then to Miami, from where my brother and family flew back to Germany and I flew back to Vancouver. Due to the side trip to Miami, Air Canada did not have my or that of my relative's return trip in their computer system. And apparently, airlines cannot let anyone on board flying to Turks and Caicos without proof that the passenger is leaving the Turks again. Thankfully, my assistant had bundled all, e-tickets and hotel reservations, in a folder – normally, I just use my passport to get a boarding pass if I even wait to get it at the airport – and I could proof that indeed we were leaving the Turks again. Arriving there, we had to fill out a form, answering the question where one would stay. I dutifully wrote “Beaches Resort” and was then questioned by the nice officer at passport check as to what I was going to do there. I was slightly baffled, definitely very tired and already soaked from walking across the airport outside. I thought really? But (wo)manfully I swallowed and told him that I was going to don my bathing suit and do nothing at all 5 days long. Apparently, it was the right answer and I was allowed in.

There were a few oopsies, like when I did not dead bolt my door after finally making it into my room (wasn’t ready until 2 hours after arrival), stripped to my birthday suit, started unpacking when the door opened and – I guess – the supervisor of the maids, barged in to the check if the room was clean and proceeded to ask me if I had just checked in. Again, (wo)manfully swallowed and did NOT (although, I wanted to) say, that I have a habit of dropping from ceilings in strange hotels butt-naked and limited myself to just glare at her.

It was incredible hot, the sun was burning and there were not enough umbrellas, huts or cabanas. The latter, one was able to rent for an outrageously daily price which I did the last two days. Not that it was easy; the first day, it went relatively fast, a butleress (sorry, that is what they call themselves) showed up only an hour after renting and really nicely placed towels on the lounger and brought along a cooler with ice. Unfortunately, she had forgotten to also bring the name tag, so I had to wait until the “official” reserve sign was up to leave for the washroom or pool (my family had gone snorkeling). It took only another hour.

The next day was not as easy. First, no one can do anything before 9 am because that is when the sales office opens and some coordinator knows if and how many cabanas are free. Then, when a free one (the same as the day before sans the reserved in my name sign) was found, they wanted me to toddle to the sales office to sign that I was going to pay the day’s rent. As I had done so the day before at the reception/lobby, I did not see any reason why I could not do so again. After several phone calls (I likely could have jogged to the sales office despite the heat faster), it was confirmed that I indeed could sign for the cabana right there in the lobby. However, we are not sure what went wrong; at one point, there were 4 or 5 staff members involved and it took 6 hours until the cooler was brought and the reserve sign (the only thing we were really interested in as we are totally capable to place towels on chairs and the pool bar was less than a minute walk away). Eventually, the director of butler service came and apologized and told us that someone had confused F5 (ours) with C5 and had set up there. As there obvious similarities between F and C, we understood, especially as we now did not have to pay the daily rent and also received a cheese (which did not quite survive the walk from wherever to our cabana) and fruit platter. Despite all, it was great and we are looking to potentially go back for my sister-in-law's 50th birthday.

Then, only by cheer luck, did we find out that American Airlines had changed the flight time and we had to be an hour earlier at the airport than originally scheduled or planned.

However, shopping in Miami was great and we had a wonderful time.

My return flight was less than stellar. Originally, I was on Delta from Miami via Minneapolis to Vancouver. And Delta actually alerted me via text that the flight out of Miami was delayed by 1 ½ hours, too bad that I only had an hour and twenty minutes in Minneapolis. However, the agent was really helpful and got me onto a flight to JFK and then to Vancouver. Of course, both were late too and I finally got home at 2 am.  My family flying to Germany was faster home than I.

And now it’s back to the grind.  Did I miss anything?

Disconnected for a while

I am off for a week of ocean, sun and Bellinis.

Both of my babies are better, Madison's lameness is a herniated disk in her neck, she is staying in the vet hospital for enforced rest, rehab and acupuncture. Charlie started traditional chemo today, the oral and tougher one, well we don't if it was the chemo or missing his sister, made him sick. The other baby is just confused. My husband feels he can handle Charlie as he will not need to go back for chemo until 3 weeks from now and is just on his regular old age meds. Madison will have visits from my husband and my daughter and hopefully when I return, I can pick her up and then the tribe is back together.

A week from Hell

Last week Wednesday, our dog groomer noticed a swollen anal gland on Charlie, our almost 10 year Bernese. No big deal we thought; at the previous grooming 6 weeks earlier, he had it then too. We took him to the vet, a technician drained it and he was fine.

So hubby took him the next day only to hear that this time there was nothing to drain because it was more of a mass. On Friday, he had a biopsy and some blood tests and Monday (yesterday) he went in for an ultrasound. We were told if it was cancer - and there was a 90% likelihood - the real issue would if it had spread. Anal gland cancer not spread in an otherwise health dog (not necessary as old as ours) has a two to three year survival rate. Well, given the average life expectancy of Bernese Mountain dogs, he has already overreached his but then so has his sister and we are hopeful, both will make it another year or so.

Well the results of the biopsy says it is consistent with anal glad cancer but it still is not confirmed and the ultrasound shows it has not spread. However, the mass is leaning heavily against the colon. And if cancer has actually gone into the colon, it will be much more difficult to operate.

Thankfully, due to Madison (and Charlie's ACL tear surgery) we are already patients at the best vet clinic. Charlie will go Thursday for more scans and is already tentatively scheduled for surgery on Friday. Both, his regular vet and the oncologist feel that the biggest problem may not be the cancer but the length of the anesthesia required for such surgery.  The surgeon scheduled is the same who pulled my daughter's dog through when everyone else had given up.

Madison had her check-up scan and is still cancer free but has now a large fat deposit tumor pressing on a nerve above her elbow. We hope we can with exercise and manipulation (ie. massage) of the leg to free the nerve so she will not need any anesthesia to remove it.

And then this morning, I got a call that my oldest son had a heart attack. He has been fighting pancreas problems for some time, which resulted in stomach problems. When feeling well, he would eat more and definitely junk food and has gained an enormous amount of weight. Always saying he lose it soon and always waiting for a magic bullet. He has been the last two years in and out of hospital and apparently no one can pin point what causes the pancreatic problems. I hope that a) this has scarred him enough to make some lifestyle changes and b) that he gets a proper diagnosis and can be treated accordingly.

I can only hope the rest of the week will be quieter. Please keep your fingers crossed.

Kindle Problems

I just had a weird thing happening. I was scrolling through my books, looking for a re-read and settled on Price of Desire (The Desire Series Book 2). Only the book was not on the device or the cloud. I went to "Manage my Kindle" and downloaded it again. I tried this 3 times without success. So I called Amazon.

CS told me there had been formatting update and therefore, they had to do the update and then send it to my Kindle (Kindle App on IPad).

Still not back, so CS asked me to de-register my Kindle app and then re-register. Still could not find it under the author's name. I then went to sort by "recent" and sure enough it was there however not under Goodman, Jo but under Jo, Goodman.

I am glad I have my book back but it does raise the question in my mind, if I buy a book, download onto device, read and then archive it back on the cloud and kind of forget about it and it needs formatting updating or whatever, the book then is lost to me unless I remember it and call Amazon to re-deliver.

What happens if I forgot about the book and it gets re-issued and I buy it again? It almost happened to me with Sandy Blair's A Man In A Kilt (Zebra Debut) which was re-issue as The Laird (A Castle Blackstone Novel).

Also, now I have to go through all my books and find those which I have not read yet.

Anyone brave enough?

I found this in one of the British newspapers I regularly read

I don't know how long it will be free; here is the the web address for the app: How-old.net

Knock on Wood

My two senior puppies did it: Charlie survived his anesthesia to clean his teeth and the really big news, Madison, our almost 11 year old Bernese Mountain dog, the one which fought bone cancer and recently had to have her stomach pumped because she ate glossy cardboard, was declared cancer free as of today. No more chemo pills, however we will continue with her bone strengthening treatment (now only every 8 weeks) and she will have a scan every 3 months.

I would have posted photos but it seems to be hit and miss when I do it. And today was a miss.
